        • Our History

        • On January 24th 1973, the then Gingerland Senior School officially became a secondary school and was renamed the Gingerland Secondary School. The school's internal physical structure remained the same, but the curriculum was changed to accommodate Foreign Languages, sciences and other subjects, and all students who had the academic ability were afforded the opportunity to sit the Cambridge Examination prior to leaving school.

Mr. Mervil Kirton was the first principal and served from 1973 to 1976 with a staff of fourteen teachers. He was succeeded by Mrs. Rosalie Andre who served as principal from 1976 until 1982. She was instrumental in upgrading the badly deteriorated Home Economics Centre and furnishing it with more modern equipment. She introduced the remedial classes to help children who have reading challenges. It was under her leadership in 1979 that the first group of students sat CXC examinations.

Mr. Wendell Huggins replaced Mrs. Andre in 1982 and continued as Principal until 1988. He formed the Literary and Debating Society and rejuvenated the school’s choir to be the best on the island. At the end of his tenure, he was replaced by the late James Neal who took the reigns from February to October 1988. Guidance and discipline soared under his leadership. Mrs. Lornette Esdaile took up the position as headmistress from October 1988 until July 1993. It was during that time that the school’s crest, designed by the late Mrs. Shirlene Stanley, came into being.

After Mrs. Manners was transferred to the Education Dept. in September 1993, the late Mrs. Versilie Powell was appointed principal, a position she held until July 1999. It was during her tenure that the male students’ shirt colour was changed from blue to beige; purposefully done to create a new identity. She also introduced Clothing and Textiles, a technical subject, due to her love for sewing.

Mrs. Jennifer Hodge replaced Mrs. Powell as principal for one school year from September 1999 until July 2000. Then, our own Conrad Liburd took the mantle and remained in that position until he became ill in December 2004. Mr. Carl Williams ably served under Mr. Liburd as Deputy Principal from September 2000 to July 2002.

From January 2005 until July 2008, Mr. Keith Glasgow acted as principal. During his tenure, he encouraged and guided three students to sit 12 CSEC subjects, a number that had never been attempted before. The students were successful in passing the twelve subjects. Moreover, Mr. Glasgow taught Economics out of school and was instrumental in having students register for Economics at GSS. Human and Social Biology and EDPM were also introduced at the CSEC level during his tenure. Ms. Angelica Elliott acted as Deputy Principal during Mr. Glasgow's leadership.

In 2008, Mrs. Dawn Jeffers was appointed as principal with Mr. Shefton Liburd as the deputy. Under her leadership, music and physical education were introduced at the CXC level. Unfortunately, Mrs. Jeffers became ill in April 2012, and this resulted in Mr. Shefton Liburd spearheading the institution until his accident in August 2012. Consequently, Mrs. Lorna Brandy was appointed as principal with Mrs. Lineth Williams as Deputy principal until August 2017. Mrs. Lineth Williams was appointed as principal after Mrs Brandy left in 2017 and Mr. Kayno David deputy principal.  In 2022, Mr. Kayno David was appointed as principal with Ms. Philicia Walters as deputy principal.
